The holy Eid-ul-Azha, the second largest religious festival of Muslims, is scheduled to be held in Bangladesh on August 12. The announcement was made following the sighting of new moon of the Arabic month of Zilhaj on Friday evening. Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, State Minister for Religious Affairs, made the announcement after a meeting of the National Moon Sighting Committee at Islamic Foundation’s Baitul Mukarram office was in session after the Maghrib prayers.
Muslims celebrate the Eid-ul-Azha on the 10th of Zilhaj to commemorate the true spirit of sacrifice made by Prophet Ibrahim. On this day, some 4,000 years ago, Prophet Ibrahim had offered to sacrifice his son Ismail, who willingly submitted to the will of his father to please Allah. But the Almighty in His benign mercy spared Hazrat Ismail and instead sent a ram to be sacrificed.
Muslims will be praying in mass congregation around the country on the morning. Following the morning prayers and over the next few days sacrifices will commence. The Eid festival is the largest Muslim holiday and sees copious celebration from Muslims around the world. Very much a festival of unison, Muslims are to pray together during the festivities, as well as celebrate together.
