Eid shopping gets momentum

With the approaching of Eid-ul-Fitr fast, shopping for Eid is gaining momentum in shopping centers and markets in the capital city and its outskirts. Shopkeepers and salespersons are passing very busy time as people are thronging the shopping malls and fashion houses in Dhaka.

The salespersons are hoping to make good business this year as there is hardly any restriction for Coronavirus. People celebrated Eid in a limited manner in last two years due to pandemic. The presence of buyers in the shopping centers is much higher this year than other years.

After visiting shopping malls of the city including Jamuna Future Park and Bashundhara City Shopping Complex, it was seen that there was a huge crowd of customers in almost all markets. The shopping malls get more crowded on weekends. However, the number of customers has been increasing every day. The sellers expressed their satisfaction over the sales so far ahead of Eid.

Alif Islam, a shopper at the Bashundhara Shopping Complex, on Saturday said, “I and some of my friends have come here to buy Punjabi. I have visited several stalls but the price is bit higher.”

A shopkeeper of the market said the sales are better this year compared to last two years. The sales are better on Friday and Saturday during the Ramadan. The pressure of the buyers is higher after evening than the daytime, he added.

Although the nor’wester and rain caused some obstacles, there was a little impact on the sale.

After a couple of days of sporadic clashes between new market traders and students, New Market was crowded with shoppers on Saturday.

There was a rush of buyers in the market in the afternoon. Many people with their families have already done Eid shopping.

Rudra, one of the city dwellers, said, “Now the situation in New Market is quite normal. I and my family members have come here to buy clothes and other essentials ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.”

“I will finish my shopping today as it is troublesome for me to come to shopping malls again and again during the Ramadan,” he added.
