Eid markets yet to gain momentum in Sylhet

The Eid shopping in Sylhet city is yet to gain momentum for the absence of buyers although 10 days left for the Eid-ul-Fitr.

The shopping malls in the city are ready to sell their desired item of Eid collection. But the buyers still show reluctance to collect Eid items although they visit different shopping malls, said the shop owners. 

This year the presence of buyer are very low compared to the previous Eid market. Many buyers are seen to skip the different shopping malls as the prices of Eid items have gone up according to their budget. 

However, traders claimed that the prices of the Eid items have not increased much against the production costs and quality.

Visiting to the different markets, this correspondent found that the prices of the products related to women and children, including clothes and handbags, have witnessed a hike while that of men remained the same.

There are thin crowds of buyers were seen at the posh market of Al –Hamra City Shopping Complex, Sukriya Market, Modubon Market, Millennium Market, Kaniz Plaza and shops at Noyasarak Road. 

Middle income people go to Hasan Market and Hawker Market that experience a huge buyer but there is no sales compared to the presence said many shop owner of two market. 

But this situation will change as the Eid come closer, hoped many Eid shoppers.  

In this situation, many shop owners said they are unable to earn of daily expense in the last 20 days. “If the situation prevails in the coming days, how can we survive”, said a trader. 

Jesmin Begum, who came from Beanibazar upazila with her family to buy Eid dress, said the she feels unhappy experiencing the Eid collection. She said, “I come to city in the hope of buying a better dress but I feel desperate to see the collections.” 

Generally, the rush of shoppers start rising after 10 days of Ramadan, but this year the trend turns out as very low compared to the previous year.

Some fashion house owners said they have not brought any major changes to their fashion apparels. They rather put emphasis on number of collections as shoppers look for new variety.
