The government of Bangladesh is repeatedly trying to bring back the fugitive killers of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, though the process is being delayed due to various complications in the rules and policies of the countries where the killers have taken shelter.

Reportedly, among the five self-proclaimed killers of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, law enforcers have correct information about the whereabouts of only two convicts. According to sources, of those five fugitive killers, Rashed Chowdhury is now staying in US and the US government granted his political asylum. Another fugitive killer Noor Chowdhury is staying in Canada though he has not been granted asylum by Canada as yet. On the other hand, the government has no definite information about the whereabouts of the other three absconding death row convicts Khandaker Abdur Rashid, Shariful Haque Dalim and Risaldar Moslehuddin. However, foreign minister AK Abdul Momen on Monday said the government would reward those who can give information on the whereabouts of the fugitive killers of Bangabandhu.

However, despite repeated requests from Bangladesh to deport Noor, the Canadian government is not showing any response as its policy does not approve deporting any person to any country that has the provision for death sentence.

Taking this factor into consideration, Bangladesh should gear up adequate diplomatic efforts to push US and Canada to deport the two fugitive killers of Bangabandhu. It would not be an easy task for the present government to bring back the convicted fugitive killers of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to the country as the governments led by HM Ershad and Khaleda Zia had patronised them in such a manner that they are strongly placed in different countries. It is unfortunate that we have not been able to bring all the killers of the Father of the Nation to justice. We must devise concrete measures to bring back the absconding killers of Bangabandhu to face the full force of law.
