With no signs of descending of the ferocity of the deadly coronavirus in sight, the government has extended the ongoing holidays of all educational institutions in the country till August 6 considering the overall safety of the students.
Mohammad Abul Khair, public relations officer of the Ministry of Education, confirmed it to The Bangladesh Post on Monday afternoon, saying “The ministry has taken the decision at an emergency meeting considering the overall safety of the students.”
Earlier on Sunday, Secretary of the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education Md Akram-al-Hossain said that there is no situation to open educational institutions or take examinations at the moment.
“Therefore, we have talked to the Ministry of Education. The two ministries will take a decision on Monday,” he added.
On March 16, the government decided to keep all the educational institutions closed from March 17 to 31, aiming to prevent the spread of deadly coronavirus. No formal classes have been held since that day.
Later, in several steps, the Education Ministry extended the time of the closure till June 15.
Educational activities of about four crore students from primary to tertiary level are being hampered due to coronavirus crisis.
On March 29, the government introduced online education through Sangsad TV for secondary students so that students can make up the losses due to closure of the educational institutions.
Later, on April 7, the government also started TV education for primary students, and on April 19, for technical and madrassa students.
Meanwhile, the coronavirus situation of the country is worsening day by day.
Bangladesh on Monday reported 3,099 new coronavirus cases in the span of 24 hours, raising the number of total confirmed cases to 90,619, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
“The deadly virus claimed 38 more lives during the last 24 hours, taking the death toll in the country to 1209,” said Additional Director General of DGHS Prof Dr Nasima Sultana at an online briefing on Monday.
