Edn instts to be shut again if Omicron scare mounts

Education Minister Dipu Moni said if the situation across the country deteriorates due to the new Omicron variant of coronavirus, educational institutions will be closed.

“However, we do not have such a plan now. We want the educational institutions should carry on its activities in a continuous process,” she said.

She made the remarks while visiting the HSC examination center at Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College on Thursday.

“We are monitoring the situation. Discussions are going on with the technical committee. We cannot do anything going beyond the boundaries of science. The protection of our children is above everything. We are ready to do anything to ensure their safety,” she added.

She also said, “At present, the number of classes won’t be increased in the educational institutions. We wanted to increase classes from the beginning of new year (2022). However, the technical committee has advised us not to increase the number of classes due to the fear of Omicron, the new variant of coronavirus.”

The minister also mentioned that next year's Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinations might be held in mid of 2022.

Mahbub Hossain, Secretary of the Secondary and Higher Education Division under the Ministry of Education, Syed Golam Faruk, Chairman, Department of Secondary and Higher Education and Prof Nehal Ahmed, Chairman, Dhaka Education Board were present during this time, along with others.
