The Editors' Council on Wednesday strongly condemned Jatiya Juba Shakti, the youth wing of the National Citizen Party (NCP), for alleging that the media is acting as a spokesperson for intelligence agencies and attempting to tarnish the image of those involved in the July Uprising.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the council rejected the allegations, describing them as an "unprecedented" campaign against the media.
"The media, particularly print outlets, played a crucial role in last December's mass protests," it said.
It highlighted that under the previous Awami League regime, editors and journalists faced persecution and harassment.
"During the uprising, the media covered critical issues including killings by state agencies, violation of human rights and internet blackout.
The council noted that the media is also playing a constructive role in highlighting the interim government's shortcomings in establishing a democratic state and upholding the principles of citizens' rights to a fair and just society.
The Editors' Council urged all parties to uphold principles of information and accountability.
