The Election Commission (EC) wants to complete all elections of union parishads (UPs), by-elections, Narayanganj City Corporation and Zilla Parishad by December this year.
This information was disclosed by Secretary of the Election Commission (EC) Md Humayun Kabir Khandaker in a press conference on Monday at the media center of the Election Commission at Agargaon in the city.
The EC secretary said, “We have been able to hold elections in only 204 out of 4500 union parishads. In today's commission meeting, it has been decided to hold by-elections in about 4,000 unions, Narayanganj City Corporation, Municipality, Comilla-7 vacant seat, Zilla Parishad and other elections by December next.
The EC meeting scheduled to be held in the first week of September will take decisions when the elections will be held.”
Humayun Kabir Khandaker said,“There is a committee headed by Election Commissioner Brigadier General (retd) Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury on the issue of issuing National Identity Cards (NIDs) to citizens born on or before January 1, 2008. The decision will be taken after discussing the matter in that committee meeting.”
