The outgoing Chief election commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda has said that the performances of the commission were highly successful with some failures.

Huda said that during his five-year tenure in the office he held 6,790 elections in the last five years, including the National Assembly elections. He also mentioned that he was very proud of his works which he described as very satisfactory.

Stating that all the elections have been completed, he said, “I have done a lot of work outside of routine. I have done a lot of law reformation work as well. I have formed many rules including RPO and Bengali conversion.”

He made the statements while speaking at the farewell press briefing held at the election building on Monday. The term of the current Election Commission ended on Monday.

Huda said, “We have undertaken various activities during our tenure. We did not succeed in some of the tasks because we have lagged behind for the last 2 years due to the corona pandemic. Even then we put our best efforts.”

“I faced many challenges during my five years in office,” he said, adding, “I successfully completed my responsibilities.”

“The Election Commission has performed its duties properly for the last five years,” he pointed out.

“The great success of the commission is the introduction and successful use of EVM system,” he said, adding, “We were trying to make the elections more credible through proper implementation of the laws.”

“We had trained 24,881 people, especially in EVM. We have completed all the local government elections. EVMs were a big challenge but we were able to conduct elections with great success. The process of getting NID has been simplified. The treasury has been enriched,” said a happy-looking CEC.

Asked if he is feeling embarrassed to leave, the CEC said, “Not at all. There is no embarrassment, no weakness. We have tried our best to perform our duties maintaining neutrality. We have acted in accordance with the laws.”

Senior Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukder did not attend the press conference even though he was in the election building. However, he later held a separate press briefing.

However, the search committee for appointing the new Election Commission received names of 329 candidates until Saturday.

Of them, 136 names came from political parties, 40 from professionals, 34 from individuals and 99 names via email.
