EC’s decision to transfer UNOs, OCs

A time-befitting move ahead of JS poll

We applaud the Election Commission’s (EC) decision to transfer all the officers-in-charge (OCs) of all police stations and Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNOs) in order to conduct the 12th Jatiya Sangsad (JS) election smoothly. The 12th general election of Bangladesh is slated for 7 January 2024.

We think the EC’s latest move will not cause any disruption. This decision of the commission will be a milestone as the UNOs who have already completed more than one year while the OCs who have completed six months of service at their respective current workplaces will have no scope to influence the next general elections.

Earlier on 30 November, the commission asked the government to transfer all the OCs and UNOs across the country ahead of the 12th national election. We believe the political parties, which are going to participate in the next national poll, have full trust in all decisions of the commission.

So, it is now clear to all that the EC is fully independent and it has the authority to collect information on administrative and law and order related incidents across the country. The political parties should have confidence in any decision of commission.

It is now clear to

 all that the EC

is fully independent

The government will do only its routine work right now. If any conflict or chaos takes place anywhere in the election, the commission has the full authority to take action against that kind of incidents. We also appreciate the EC as it has taken measures to ensure the security of all candidates, including independent ones who have submitted their nomination forms.  So, all political parties must abide by the decision taken by the commission.

The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal led incumbent commission has the Constitutional obligation to conduct the next general election in a free, fair and credible manner. Keeping this in mind, the commission has been working hard to arrange the next general elections in a free, fair and participatory manner since long.

A peaceful environment is prevailing in the country. But, the BNP is involved in conspiracy to destroy the fair and peaceful environment and create unrest centring the upcoming national polls. The commission will organise the polls and the government will provide all out cooperation to hold a free, fair and neutral election. And the local and foreign observers will observe the poll.
