EC publishes gazette of newly elected MPs

The Election Commission (EC) on Tuesday published a gazette notification on the results of the 12th National Elections with details of 298 newly elected Members of Parliament (MPs).

EC public relations director Shariful Alam said that the gazette has been published on Tuesday afternoon.

Meanwhile, the Parliament Secretariat is preparing for the new MP-elects to be sworn in today.

The 12th National Elections took place on Sunday (January 7) where the Awami League led alliance bagged a landslide win with 225 seats.

The new members of parliament have to take oath within three days from the publication of the gazette. Such is the obligation of the gazette.

Although the parliamentarians were scheduled to take oath on Thursday (January 11), Awami 

League General Secretary Obaidul Quader said that the newly elected parliamentarians will take oath on Wednesday (January 10), the day of Bangabandhu’s homecoming. And on Thursday at 7 pm, the swearing-in of the new cabinet will be held at Bangabhaban.

As per rules- EC will send the gazette to the Speaker to take necessary action of oath after publishing it. There is a constitutional obligation to complete the oath-taking ceremony within three days of publication of the results of parliamentary elections in the gazette form. A session must be convened within 30 days thereafter. 

It is to be noted that on January 7, the 12th National Parliamentary Elections were held across the country. According to the unofficial results, out of 298 seats, Awami League led by Sheikh Hasina won 222 seats and Jatiya Party won 11 seats. 

However, the winning rate of independent candidates is higher this time. They won 62 seats. And the candidate of Workers’ Party and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal got one seat each. Bangladesh Kalyan Party's Syed Mohammad Ibrahim also won from a seat in Cox’s Bazar.
