The Election Commission (EC) is mulling a full-fledge online service for the issuance of National Identity (NID) card, voters’ list update and other associated works -- a shift from manually data collection method.
Initiative has been taken on test run to avail the services including registration of new voters, distribution of NID, correction of name in NID and change of address in voter list.
“Online services related to NID and voter list started on trial,” said Election Commissioner Brigadier General (retd) Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury.
The EC began offering its services online on April 27, reducing hassle to a great extent, according to the sources at EC's NID Wing.
“We are receiving positive response and will continue the online services,” Chowdhury said.
Meanwhile, process of gathering information on 10-year-olders for their card is in progress. Announcement on the NID registration for people born after 2011 may come soon, according to the EC sources.
Commissioner Chowdhury, however, said it would not be possible to complete a door-to-door voter search now.
So, launching a fully online service for a particular group might work, he added.
New app
The Commission also plans to develop a new app within a month to make all services on the NID available.
The app will help anyone modify the voter list or NID, retrieve a lost card, change addresses and become a new voter through online, the EC sources said.
