Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda has said that the decision to hold by-elections in Corona was taken for constitutional reasons and not to benefit any individual or party.
“The Election Commission has no legal opportunity to postpone the election. However, the President can take the matter to the Supreme Court. We went to the President and he said that there is no chance of postponing elections”, he added.
The CEC told these to reporters after a meeting on law and order and exchange of views with the candidates on the occasion of by-election of Jashore-6 constituency (Keshabpur) held at Abu Sharaf Sadeq Auditorium in Keshabpur on Saturday noon.
Earlier, addressing members of the law enforcement, the CEC said Corona virus will stay for a long time. That is why everything cannot be stopped and election has to be done in time.
Therefore, he instructed the concerned authorities to come to the polling centres in compliance with the health rules. However, the CEC mentioned that voters have to confirm their identities by removing their masks at the polling centres.
The meeting was chaired by Jashore Deputy Commissioner Tamizul Islam Khan. Election Commissioner Brigadier General (retd) Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury, Additional Secretary of the Election Commission Ashok Kumar Debnath, Joint Secretary Farhad Ahmed Khan, Khulna Divisional Commissioner Anwar Hossain Hawladar and Khulna Range DIG Khandaker Mohid Uddin were present in the meeting.
