EC declares 1,985 candidates valid, 731 invalid

The Election Commission (EC) on Monday declared 1,985 candidates valid and the rest 731 others invalid for the 12th Jatiya Sangsad (JS) election slated for January 7, 2024. 

Earlier total of 2,716 candidates submitted nomination papers for participation in the election to all the 300 constituencies across the country.

But, after primary verification for four days from December 1 to December 4, the returning officers across the country announced those 1,985 candidates valid.

According to the EC data, 26.91% of nomination papers were cancelled this time, up from 25.60% in 2018 polls.

Additional Secretary Ashok Kumar Debnath of the Election Commission on Monday said, nomination papers of other 731 candidates were declared invalid due to submission of false information and for the lack of required papers and documents.  

Md Mahbubur Rahman, a joint secretary of the EC, said a large number of independent candidates submitted false documents related to signatures of at least one percent of voters in their own constituencies. Besides, some other candidates were found loan defaulters while some other could not submit all the necessary papers and documents required.

In the 2018 polls, 3,065 candidates submitted nomination forms to the Election Commission, with 1,865 candidates ultimately participating in the election.

During the 2014 polls, a total of 1,107 candidates submitted nomination papers. However, nominations for 230 candidates were cancelled, 334 candidates withdrew their candidature, and 543 candidates ultimately participated in the polls.

EC official sources said, a total nomination papers were submitted by 747 independent candidates and the rest 1969 by 29 registered political parties.

Meanwhile, the candidates, whose nomination papers have been declared invalid, can appeal against the primary decision of the returning officers from today (Tuesday) and this process will continue till December 15.

In this regard, the EC has opened 10 booths in 10 zones in the EC headquarters.

The number of total voters is 11,96,91633 and votes will be cast a total of 42,103 centres across the country.
