EC asks govt not to transfer officials without permission

The Election Commission has asked the government not to transfer any election related officials without permission of it as polls schedule of Dhaka’s two city corporations has been announced. In this regard, the Election Commission on Monday sent a letter signed by senior secretary of EC Md Alamgir to the cabinet division asking not to transfer any election related officials until 15 days of publishing gazette notification of the election result.

The Dhaka North and South City Corporation polls are scheduled to be held on January 30. The letter stated that the EC has appointed returning officers and assistant returning officers for the city corporations. The commission has also appointed divisional commissioner as appeal authority for candidates if their nominations are cancelled. The Commission will also appoint presiding officers, assistant presiding officers and polling officers from government, non government and autonomous institutions for conducting the city polls.

The EC has also appointed executive and judicial magistrates along with personnel of the law enforcement agencies to maintain law and order during the polls, the letter said. Besides, the EC will also appoint teachers of government and government approved educational institutions as election officials for conducting the polls, the letter added.

The letter also said that the EC would setup polling stations at different offices and institutions for holding the polls. “According to the Local Government (City Corporation) Election Procedure, those who will be appointed as election officials would not be transferred from the announcement of polls schedule until 15 days of publishing gazette notification of the elections,” the letter stated.

The last date of filing nomination paper of two city corporations is December 31. The nomination paper would be scrutinized on January 2 and the last date for withdrawing nomination paper is January 9. Election symbols would be distributed on January 10, according to the schedule.
