Early winter vegetable cultivation continues in Chuadanga

Early winter vegetable cultivation is going on on the both banks of Karatoa River in border union of Jibannagar upazila of Chuadanga. As soil fertility is good and water is easily available, the common farmers are inclined towards early vegetable cultivation. These winter vegetables include red leafy greens, green leafy vegetables, gourds, pumpkin greens, dates, papayas and bananas.

The Karatoa and Bhairab rivers of Jibannagar upazila have recently been excavated by the Water Development Board. After excavation, the surplus soils were sold by various contractors under the Water Development Board on deposit and made suitable for cultivation by marginal farmers.

In Hariharnagar, Habibbur, Jadavpur area of border union of Jibannagar upazila, it was seen that farmers are cultivating vegetables in advance on the banks of Karatoya River. Moreover, already many farmers have grown vegetable seedlings. Farmers are busy applying fertilizers, watering and weeding the vegetable fields. Again, many farmers are preparing soil for vegetable cultivation.

Farmer Motehar Hossain said that we have benefited a lot by removing the soil from the banks of Karatoya River after digging. Here we can now grow seasonal vegetables. I can make profit by cultivating these vegetables. Abdul Aziz, a farmer of Habibpur village, said, I have planted a banana plantation on the banks of the Karatoya river. A lot of beautiful bananas have caught. We are getting an additional income by farming here as the soil is removed from the banks of the river.

Yachin Ali said that the removal of soil from the banks of the river after digging the Karatoa River by the government has benefited the farmers of the area a lot. Farmers are cultivating different types of vegetables on the banks of the river. They will benefit a lot.
