Prime Minister and Awami League (AL) President Sheikh Hasina in her party’s polls manifesto for the 2024 general election, had vowed to build a developed, prosperous and Smart Bangladesh by 2041. And we believe Bangladesh will be upgraded to a high-middle-income country by 2031 and a developed, prosperous, smart one by 2041 under the dynamic leadership of the AL, the bearer of the spirit of the Liberation War as the people again voted the party to power in the national parliamentary election to serve the nation.

Keeping the electoral promises in mind, Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Tazul Islam tells Parliament that each member of parliament (MP) will get Tk 20 crore to carry out development projects in their respective constituencies. When the lawmakers will get the allocated money they will be able to fulfil the promises of development in their respective constituencies.

It is normal for parliamentarians to make many promises to the people for the development of their respective areas. Naturally, as the MPs are eager to fulfil those promises and the Prime Minister has very sincerely realised the matter by making a scheme to give Tk20 crore to each MP's constituency for a period of five years. Therefore, lawmakers must ensure transparency and accountability in spending the public money.

Bangladesh is moving forward on the path of rapid development. So the government expenditure has increased several times compared to earlier time.

All concerned must play

the role of ‘watchdog’ to

ensure appropriate use of

public funds

Therefore, all concerned must play the role of ‘watchdog’ to ensure appropriate use of public funds.  Once the project is completed to fulfil the promises and development of the constituencies of the MPs, it will be considered to take up a new project.

We believe the lawmakers will be firmly committed to transparency and accountability in their governing policy to protect the people’s interests and rights. They will have to maintain the practice of transparency, accountability, good governance, and democratic values.

The lawmakers must have a commitment to providing better and quality services to the people and establishing good governance by building citizen-centric, transparent, accountable, knowledge-based, welfare-oriented, integrated, and efficient smart administration. The MPs will have to enhance the capacity of local government in budget formulation and project implementation aimed at achieving balanced development.

The lawmakers will have to continue their fight against graft to keep on the country’s development spree and uphold its achievements. Though it is not possible for any country to root out corruption cent percent, it is the responsibility of lawmakers to check corruption so that it cannot impede the uplift of the country.

The MPs must be transparent and accountable for the best use of the public money for proper implementation of the development programmes. We hope our lawmakers will ensure transparency and accountability and work with utmost sincerity to implement government projects smoothly for the welfare of the country.
