Durga idol making nears completion

The Durga puja, the largest religious festival of the Hindu community, is knocking at the door. The traditional clay work artisans of the city are now extremely busy to give a final touch of the Durga and other statues. 

This year, the Durga Puja will be held in 70 alters (mandaps or places) under Rajshahi City Corporation while in 333 mandaps in Rajshahi district, said Tapan Kumar Sen, Trustee of Hindu Dharmiya Kalyan Trust (Hindu Religion Welfare Trust) of greater Rajshahi district. 

Craftsmen making the Durga statues were seen to work with utmost sincerity and devotion at various places of the city. 

Artisan Kartik Kumar Paul of the city’s Alupatty area said he has been making the idols for last two and a half months. 

Now, the shapes of the statues have been completed and for the next five days, he is busy with brush, colour and clothing and ornamenting of the statues, he added. 

Kartik along with four of his co-artisans have so far working to       give a complete shape of 17         statues, he said.   

At Dhamasova Temple at Miapara area, the works of ornamenting, painting and dressing the statue were going on in the full swing.

Artisan Gonesh Kumar Paul said this year he has been working on 17 statues which was 22 last year. 

Soil work and drying of the statues have been completed and now the works of dying, painting and ornamentation are now continuing, he added.

Arun Kumar Paul of Baisnava Sova Mandir at Ganakpara area said he started shaping the Durga statue after the end of Rathyatra. 

There will be 70 statues in the city this year which is less than that of the last year, said Shymal Kumar Ghose, general secretary of Hindu, Bouddho, Christian Oikkya Parishad, Rajshahi.
