A special convocation of Dhaka University to confer the honorary degree ‘Doctor of Laws’ (posthumous) to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman will be held on October 29.
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was a student of the university’s Law Department. Bangabandhu’s younger daughter Sheikh Rehana will receive the degree on his behalf at the special convocation.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is also a former student of Dhaka University and daughter of Bangabandhu, will attend as the Convocation Speaker. President Mohammed Shahabuddin, who is also chancellor of the university, is expected preside over the convocation.
The convocation ceremony will begin at 3:30 pm (October 29) at the central playground of the university.
On the occasion, a preparatory meeting was held at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban on Sunday (October 22, 2023). Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman presided over the meeting.
Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) of the university Professor Dr. Muhammad Samad, Treasurer Professor Mumtaz Uddin Ahmed, members of Senate and Syndicate, deans of various faculties, provosts of various halls, chairmen of various departments, directors and heads of offices of various institutes were present at the meeting.
In the meeting, the overall activities and preparations of various sub-committees, including the executive and management committees, were reviewed for the smooth completion of the special convocation ceremony.
The convocation ceremony will be attended by foreign diplomats, invited guests, members of the Senate, Syndicate and Academic Council, faculty-students, alumni and registered graduates.
The registered teachers of the university were requested at the meeting to collect costumes from the booth at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban on October 23 to 25 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.
Meanwhile, registered graduates and alumni can collect invitations from the same booth. Besides, registered teachers and students of the university have been requested to collect invitation letters from their respective departments and institutes.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman called upon all concerned to make all the programmes of the special convocation a success.
In 2019, the proposal on conferring a posthumous PhD degree on Bangabandhu was placed at a meeting of the national committees on celebrations of Bangabandhu’s birth centenary.
Professor Dr. Muhammad Samad later proposed to hold a special convocation in this regard. The proposal was unanimously approved by the university in January 2020.
