Dhaka University (DU) will now officially observe July 14 as ‘Female Student Day’ and July 17 as ‘Terror Resistance Day’ every year—honouring the powerful role students played during the July 2024 mass uprising.

The announcement was made by DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Niaz Ahmed Khan on Monday during a commemorative event marking the first anniversary of the uprising at the Raju Memorial Sculpture on campus.

Speaking to a large gathering of students and dignitaries, Dr. Khan said the bravery of female students and the bold stand against terrorism during the movement deserved permanent recognition. "These days will now be part of our official calendar to remind future generations of the unity, sacrifice, and courage shown by our students," he stated.

The event saw DU female students arrive in a spirited procession, echoing slogans from last year’s protests. The crowd reflected a mix of emotion, determination, and pride.

"We salute everyone—students from public and private universities, colleges, and madrasas—who came together to resist injustice. Their stand created a turning point for our nation," the VC added.

He called upon the students who took part in the uprising to stay connected with DU’s legacy and contribute to building a stronger, united Bangladesh.

Advisers to the government Asif Mahmud Sajjad Bhuiyan and Mahfuzul Alam, Pro-VC Professor Dr. Sayema Haque Bidisha, Treasurer Professor Dr. M. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, and Proctor Professor Dr. Md. Saifuddin Ahmed were present at the event. The day concluded with emotional speeches, renewed pledges, and a vision of unity for the future.
