The DSEX, the core index of the Dhaka Stock, hit a 42 month high to cross the 6,300-mark on Thursday as investors showed buying spree on stocks despite virus worries.

The DSEX increased by 34.02 points or 0.54 percent to settle at 6,307. It is the highest in more than 42 months since 3 January 2018, when the DSEX was 6,318.

Market analysts said the investors’ buying support pushed the market up despite worries over the virus-induced shock to the country’s economy.

Experts said the hopeful investors have injected funds in the market as the government has kept the undisclosed money investment opportunity in the capital market in the new fiscal year.

Besides, the regulatory decision to keep the market open during the lockdown has been taken positively and pushed the market up, they added.

They mentioned that many market-supportive measures including removal of the floor price restriction from all listed securities, lower returns from the money market, budgetary measures and several regulatory reforms to build a vibrant capital market has kept the market afloat.

However, the DSE 30 Index, comprising blue chips, went up by 0.20 points to close at 2,274 and the DSE Shariah Index (DSES) increased by 6.26 points to finish at 1,359.

The turnover witnessed a rapid growth to stand at Tk 17.89 billion on the country’s premier bourse, up 8.50 percent over the previous day’s mark of Tk 16.49 billion.

The market capitalisation of the DSE also hit a fresh all-time high at Tk 5,252 billion on Thursday, surpassing the previous record high of Tk 5,219 billion recorded just two days back.

Gainers beat losers, as out of 375 issues traded, 270 advanced, 70 declined and 26 remained unchanged on the DSE trading floor.

Beximco dominated the turnover chart with shares worth about Tk 172 million changing hands.

It was followed by Saif Powertec (Tk 559 million), LafargeHolcim (Tk 438 million), Shinepukur Ceramics (Tk 306 million) and Fu-Wang Foods (Tk 246 million).

Padma Life Insurance was the day’s best gainer, posting a gain of 10 percent rise while Rupali Bank was the worst loser, losing 7.35 percent.

On the other hand, the port city bourse, the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) also saw a rapid growth with its selective category index (CSCX) gaining 68 points to close at 10,990 points.

The All-Share Price Index (CASPI) of the CSE was higher by 116 points to close at 18,318 points.

Of the 321 issues traded, 222 advanced, 75 declined and 24 remained unchanged on the CSE floor.
