The Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) on Tuesday started a week long special crash programme to destroy the breeding grounds of Aedes mosquito that transmits dengue virus. Besides, the DSCC authorities concerned announced six wards under its territory as highly vulnerable and directed to take necessary measures to free those areas from risks.

According to recent survey conducted by Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the authority announced DSCC’s ward numbers 5, 6, 11, 17, 37 and 42 as risky (vulnerable) which includes Subujbagh, South Mugdapara, Basabo, North Shahjahanpur, Santinagar, Kalabagan, Sadarghat, Kolatrabazar and Sutrapur areas.

In the wake of the survey report of DGHS, DSCC Mayor Sayeed Khokon said, “Our mosquito prevention workers will visit each houses of the identified areas in next seven days. If they find mosquito larvae, they will destroy it and also give guidelines of destroying larvae to the residents of the respective houses.”

“Even, if anyone is not aware and the situation turns into threat to the public health, legal action will be taken against the concerned by sending magistrate,” he added. He said this while inaugurating a week long crash programme to prevent Aedes mosquito at Kalabagan ground in the capital.

As a part of the programme, DSCC will spray insecticide including both adulticide and larvacide to kill mosquitoes and destroy its eggs called larvae, a DSCC official said. During the ceremony, the mayor urged the citizens to keep their houses and yards clean to prevent mosquitoes from breeding and prevent diseases like dengue.

Mayor Sayeed Khokon said that the concerned department will be asked to resume the survey after conducting a week-long special operation in the risky areas identified during the survey. Further anti-mosquito programmes will be launched based on the results of the second survey, the mayor further said.

He also sought help of the journalists to make the citizens aware of mosquito prevention programmes. DSCC Chief Executive Officer Shah Md Imdadul Haque, Chief Health Officer Brigadier General Sharif Ahmed and Secretary Mostafa Kamal Majumdar, among other officials, were also present.
