The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested Dhaka South City 39 no ward Councillor and Awami League leader Moinul Haque Manju after raiding his office. He was arrested around 12:30 pm on Thursday from his Tikatuli office following an extortion case filed with Wari police According to RAB-3 Commanding Officer (CO) Lt Col Shafee Bulbul.
“There are allegations of land grabbing, extortion, drug dealings and operating gambling facilities against him. Unlicensed gun and drugs were seized from Manju’s office during the raid,” Bulbul said Moinul Haque Manju has been detained as part of an ongoing anti-casino operation and cleansing drive. He sent the money through Hundi to America, where his family lives, he added.
Manju is an accused in an extortion case filed at Wari police station on Wednesday night (October 30). ” There are two other cases against him. He has been accused of extortion, narcotic control and arms acts. Two firearms, narcotics and drugs were recovered from his possesion.
The RAB-3 official said, it was alleged councilor Manju had illegally obtained billions of money through extortion and smuggled the money to his family members living in the United States of America. Who himself was a drug addict. To realise the amount of money he smuggled is requires legal inquiry.
He furthermore said, the prime income of source councilor was extortion. Responding to a question as to why he was not detained so earlier, despite the long allegations, The RAB official said Traders in the Rajdhani Super market have taken to the streets against councilor Manju. They said they would assist law enforcement agencies. We think this is the right time to arrest him.
After the raid at the office, members of the RAB-3 raided the house of Manzur at Gopibag. According to local residents and market traders, there are about two thousand shops in the Rajdhani supermarket. Moinul Haque Manju has been illegally occupying the post of president of market for the last five years. What he says prevail as as rule.
Earlier business men sought attention of Home Minister, Inspector General of Police and complained in various times. However, it did not work.
