DSCC announces Tk 6,119 cr budget

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) on Thursday announced Tk 6,119.59 crore budget for 2020-21 fiscal year with the emphasis on development.

DSCC Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh unveiled the biggest ever budget at a press conference at the Nagar Bhaban in the capital.

The budget is Tk 3534.28 crore higher than that of the revised budget of 2019-20 fiscal year. The revised budget of last fiscal year was Tk 2,585.31 crore. 

In the FY 2020-21budget, the DSCC has kept Tk 150 crore for the renovation of the old channel of the Buriganga River, and Tk 250 crore to recover land along the Buriganga and construct roads and parks there.

Besides, in the current fiscal, DSCC has kept Tk 300 crore for comprehensive mosquito control activities, Tk 300 crore for reducing waterlogging problem, Tk 200 crore for establishing new town at Kamrangirchar and Tk 300 crore for the development of parks.

The mayor said they have planned to invest the money in some 17 new development projects in the new fiscal year.

DSCC mayor Taposh said, “We want to bring the canals and waterbodies under the city corporation’s jurisdiction, and if necessary, we want to build walkways and parks along the banks of the waterbodies.”

“Following the desire of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, we want to make the old town free from encroachers and pollution, for which we want to make the old channel of Buriganga more scenic recovering it from encroachers,” he said.

He said they have already started the work and the Military Institute of Science and Technology is working as the consulting institution on the project.”

“We will also recover all the canals in Dhaka city and we will do the necessary maintenance work,” he said.

Taposh said they will also take initiatives to extend the banks of the Buriganga and Shitalakkhya rivers, along with making the road transport system more dynamic.

“There is a huge number of waterbodies in the city which turned into breeding grounds of mosquitoes. These waterbodies have become stagnant due to encroachment and pollution, for which they become curses for us instead of blessings,” the mayor said.

About garbage management, the mayor said they have a plan to set up Secondary Transfer Stations (STS) at all of its wards.

“We hope we will be able to set up the STS by December 31,” he said.

In the budget, the total revenue income has been estimated at Tk 1,009.2crore, income from government and foreign sources at Tk 4,916.57 crore and income from other sources has been estimated at Tk 7.70 crore. The initial balance has been set Tk 186.30 crore.

On the other hand, in the budget of 2020-21 fiscal year, the operating expenditure has been estimated at Tk 457.23 crore, total development expenditure has been estimated at Tk 5,505.64 crore, other expenditure has been estimated at Tk 2 crore, and the closing balance has been estimated at Tk 154.52 crore.

DSCC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Shah Mohammad Emdadul Haque, among other high officials of the city corporation, were present during the budget announcement programme.
