Drug peddlers controlling municipal polls in Godagari

Hundreds of drug peddlers, mainly heroin smugglers of Godagari upazila, are working as the determinants of ensuing Municipal Elections of Godagari.

 It is learnt, Godagari is infamous as an international route for heroin smuggling. Several thousand people of Godagari sadar and the adjacent char villages have turned billionaire through heroin peddling during the last four decades. 

These drug paddlers of the upazila are now in control of every thing in Godagari. They are learnt to spread money like the chaff of corn in the municipal elections.  

According to sources, Councillor candidate of ward-3 Monirul Islam Moni is now traversing the area for poll campaigning. It is alleged, Moni is an identified drug peddler. Family members of Moni have turned to one of the wealthiest people of the upazila through drug peddling. Local people informed, two infamous drug peddlers- Ahmed and Isahaq Ali of Motherpur village are moving areas with basketful of money in favour of Moni. 

Another councilor candidate of ward-2 Mofazzal Hossain Mofa was arrested by RAB with a huge quantity of heroin and Yaba on August-21 last year and after serving jail for several months, he was released on bail recently.  A group of 'influential' drug peddlers are learnt to pour money for Mofa in the elections. Mofa's contestant candiate Kazal and his family are also learnt to involve in drug peddling. 

Meanwhile, female councillor candidate Amena Begum Mukti of Rail Bazaar area is also allegedly involved in drug peddling.  Several drug peddlers are learnt to campaign for Mukti. 

Another female councilor candidate Faema Begum Furkan is also allegedly involved in retailing of drugs in the area. 

Sources said, not only the councillor candidates of the Municipality but also the Mayoral candidates in the elections were campaigning for their candidacy with the financial support of the local drug smugglers. 

However, Ayezuddin Biswas, Mayoral candidate from ruling Awami League claimed his party leaders and activists were campaigning in his support. Rather, he said, some of contestant Mayoral candidates were campaigning in the poll with the financial support of the drug smugglers.
