Drug peddler killed in Jashore ‘gunfight’

A drug peddler was killed in a gunfight with police at Sarapole area under Sadar upazila of Jashore district early on Tuesday.

The deceased, was identified as Babu Mia, 40, son of Abul Hossain of Mongolgati village of the district. He was accused in 12 cases, including arms, explosive and drugs, filed with Jashore Kotwali police station said  Md. Moniruzaman . officer in charge Jashore Kotwali police police station.

Md. Moniruzaman ,officer-in-charge of Jashore Kotwali Police Station, said tipped off that a  large consignment of drugs would be handed over, police conducted a drive in the area at 2.00am. 

As soon as police arrived the spot, drug traders opened fire at police, forcing them to fire back in self-defense that triggered the gunfight, leaving Babu and two police men  injured, he added.

Babu suffered injuries with bullets in the gunfight while others managed to flee the scene. Seriously injured Babu was taken to Jashore General Hospital where doctors declared him dead OC added.  

Mohammad Swapon, a doctor of the hospital said that the injured man, who received bullets in his head  was died before  reached to the hospital. Two policemen were also injured in the gun fight and they were admitted to a police hospital OC claimed. Police also recovered a one shooter gun, 200 yaba pills and 54 bottles of phensidyl from the spot.
