Alongside enforcement of the related laws, drivers must stop speeding competition while driving vehicles to restore order on the roads for reducing road accidents and casualties.
The opinion came on Sunday at a post-rally discussion held at the conference room of the Deputy Commissioner, Rangpur in observance of the National Road Safety Day-2022 in the metropolis
The district administration, Roads and Highways Department (RHD) and Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) chalked out programmes including rally, releasing balloons and discussion marking
the day.
Earlier, Deputy Commissioner Md. Asif Ahasan launched the observance by releasing balloons on his office premises in presence of the officials, politicians, students, transport owners, drivers, helpers, and civil society members.
Presided over by Additional District Magistrate Shahnaz Begum, the Deputy Commissioner attended the discussion as chief guest.
Superintendent of Police Md. Ferdous Ali Chowdhury attended the event as a special guest.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic Division) of Rangpur Metropolitan Police Abul Kalam Azad, Executive Engineer of RHD Mahbub Alam, Divisional Deputy Director (Engineering) of Rangpur Circle of BRTA Engineer ATM Jalal Uddin, its Assistant Director Engineer Md. Faruk Alam and Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) of Rangpur Highway Police Zahidur Rahman Chowdhury spoke.
The speakers discussed various laws enacted by the government and significant steps taken in different times and activities of law enforcement agencies in preventing road accidents. They called upon the government agencies concerned to stop driving without valid documents, take effective action on unfit vehicles and a strict stand against those who violate the laws.
There is no alternative of skilled drivers in preventing road accidents as most accidents are caused by reckless driving.
They said if the drivers do not stop speeding competition while driving, it will not be possible to restore order on the roads even with stringent enforcement of related laws by the will of the government alone.
Alongside raising awareness, transport owners, workers, passengers and pedestrians must be more responsible in obeying the laws to build safe roads, reduce accidents and human casualties, they said.
The chief guest stressed on ensuring safer use of roads, enhancing professional skill of drivers and abiding by traffic rules alongside strict enforcement of the related laws to build safe roads.
