A drive against polythene bags has begun in Cox’s Bazar following the announcement by the advisor of the Interim Government's Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Syeda Rizwana Hasan, to make the country free from polythene bags from November 1.
RAB-15 has conducted a drive in Tekpara Majhirghat area of Cox’s Bazar town on Tuesday and seized 530 sacks of polythene bags. During the drive, a mobile court conducted by RAB-15 fined an establishment named HG Enterprise Tk 2 lakh for stocking polythene bags.
The proprietor of HG Enterprise was identified as Md Kamrul Hasan, 30, son of Nurul Alam, resident of Tarabniyarchora under ward no. 7 in Cox’s Bazar municipality.
The drive was conducted at around 10:00pm on Tuesday.
The matter was confirmed in a press release sent by RAB-15 Senior Assistant Director (Law and Media) Abul Kalam Choudhury at 11:00am on Wednesday.
The press release said that acting on a tip-off, RAB came to know that there are illegal factories and warehouses of polythene bags in various locations of Cox's Bazar town which is against the environment law. Following the information, a team of RAB-15 conducted a drive at the warehouse of HG Enterprise in Tekpara Majhirghat area of Cox’s Bazar town. A total of 530 sacks of polythene bags illegally stocked at the warehouse were seized at that time.
Later, the establishment was fined Tk 2 lakh by a mobile court for producing and selling materials which are harmful for the environment.
The drive will continue in the public interest, said the RAB official.
