The Jute Department is conducting special operations against illegal stockpiles of raw jute to ensure supply of raw jute in the domestic market and to expedite the flow of jute and jute products.
The operation was carried out with the help of Director General (Additional Secretary) of Jute Department Hossain Ali Khondakar and Natore District Administration. During the raid, the mobile court was conducted in different jute warehouses of Nazirpur Bazar in Gurudashpur upazila of Natore. During the operation, about 5,000 tonnes of raw jute was seized from the warehouse of Bhai-Bhai Traders.
Recently, the production of jute mills has been put at risk due to the crisis created in the country. In this situation, the government decided to conduct a campaign to ensure the supply of raw jute to continue the trend of export income of jute and jute products. Unlicensed unscrupulous traders, raw jute dealers / warehouse keepers will not be able to stock more than 1000 tons of raw jute for more than 01 (one) month and also refrain from buying and selling raw jute, Preventing the sale and purchase of wet jute, The Jute Department is taking effective steps to ensure supply of raw jute in the market.
Also, effective measures have been taken to ensure proper seed supply to ensure jute cultivation as per the targets during the current jute season. The Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Textiles and Jute have jointly prepared a roadmap for five years to achieve self-sufficiency in quality jute seed production. If all goes well, Bangladesh will be self-sufficient in improved jute seed production by 2025. Import dependence on collection of necessary jute seeds will no longer exist. The implementation of the roadmap will start from this jute season. It will be implemented step by step in the next five years.
The Ministry of Textiles and Jute is working on a project titled ‘Advanced Technology Based Jute and Jute Seed Production and Expansion’ under the Annual Development Program (ADP) to achieve self-sufficiency in high yielding jute seed production and to motivate and assist farmers in producing quality jute. The project is being implemented in 230 upazilas of 46 districts of the country. The project directly benefits 153,000 jute farmers and indirectly 6,12,000 farmers and family members every year.
