In a bid to cut off numerous illegal gas lines across the country, state-owned Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited (TGTDCL) has launched a drive to remove illegal gas connections. In areas where most of the connections will be recognised as illegal, the gas connection of the whole area will be detached.
According to a report published in this daily on Tuesday, in just one week, TGTDCL has disconnected about 60,000 illegal connections along with around 90 kms of illegal lines within a week.
Government should constitute a task force that
will bring an affordable solution to reach
the demand for gas in our country
They also found out that about 20 million cubic feet of gas were used illegally in the areas that were disconnected. Considering the price of imported LNG, it can be seen that the disconnected illegal connections used to consume gas worth Tk 20 crore per day and the total amount stands at Tk 600 crore per month.
This is a big worry for the government as they are losing out on a big amount of revenue and also gas reserves every month. Legal users will also not get harmed in any way through illegal users. However, constant monitoring and more measures are needed to prevent further illegal lines in the future.
Measures should be taken to prevent irregularities of the unscrupulous officials who are still engaged in giving these illegal connections. Government should constitute a task force that will bring an affordable solution to reach the demand for gas in our country.
