Shaheed Dr Milon Day-2024 was observed across the country on Wednesday, commemorating the 34th martyrdom anniversary of Dr Shamsul Alam Khan Milon who was killed during the 90s’ anti-autocratic movement.
Different socio-cultural and political organisations as well as professional bodies arranged various programmes to observe the day with due respect.
The day's programmes include placing wreaths at the grave of Shaheed Dr Milon on the Dhaka Medical College campus, offering Fateha there and holding discussions to mark the day.
Health Adviser Nurjahan Begum paid homage to Dr. Milon by placing a wreath at his grave.
Speaking to reporters after placing the wreath, she called upon the people to respect those who champion democracy. She also reflected on the sacrifices made during the anti-discrimination student movement against autocracy.
“During that movement, many mothers were left bereaved,” she said. “No mother should have to endure such pain again. We all must contribute from our respective positions to ensure the welfare of the country.”
On November 27 in 1990, Dr Shamsul Alam Khan Milon, then the joint secretary general of the Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) and a teacher at Dhaka Medical College, was assassinated by gunmen near TSC on Dhaka University campus. He was on his way to a meeting aimed at intensifying the movement against the autocratic regime of HM Ershad.
Dr. Milon’s tragic death became a catalyst for the anti-autocracy movement, galvanising public sentiment and propelling the protests to new heights. Within weeks, the widespread demonstrations forced Ershad to resign, ending his autocratic rule.
BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, in separate messages, paid homage to Shaheed Dr Milon, recalling his supreme sacrifice for the restoration of democracy in the country.
