Dr Ferdousi new DG of BSRI

Dr Ferdousi Islam has been appointed as the Director General (DG) of Bangladesh Sugarcrop Research Institute (BSRI) in Ishwardi by the order of the Ministry of Agriculture Office on Wednesday. 

She was appointed as the Director General of BSRI by an order signed by Deputy Secretary of Research-3 Branch in Ministry of Agriculture Md Moniruzzaman. Earlier, Dr Ferdousi Islam was the Director (Grade-2) of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute in Gazipur. She replaced the former Director General of BSRI Dr Md Omar Ali.

Sources from BSRI office said, Dr Omar Ali went to retirement after being in duty for one year and seven months. Thursday is his last working day.

It was learnt that, the Sugarcane Research Center was established in Ishwardi in 1951. Later, the name of the Sugercane Research Center was replaced by Bangladesh Sugarcrop Research Institute by the executive order of the President at that time on November 9, 2015.

 More than 200 scientists are working in this institute and the number of officers and staff members are almost 150. The institution is conducting research and inventing technologies for the cultivation of sugarcane, asian palmyra palm, nipa palm, sugar beet, stevia and other sugar sweet crops.
