Joining the current nation-wide anti-dengue campaign, Rajdhani Unnayan Kartipakkah (RAJUK) Chairman Dr Sultan Ahmed on Monday urged all concerned to remain cautious while constructing new buildings so that water does not remain stagnant for more than three days. His motivational pleading came while inaugurating an anti-dengue drive by spraying mosquito pesticides on RAJUK Bhaban premises.
The RAJUK chairman said, "We have taken this initiative so that the Aedes mosquitoes cannot be spread around the Rajuk building, besides leaving a message for other organizations to do the same. Hopefully the Rajuk building will be completely dengue-free." With the help of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), the RAJUK started to clean dirt and garbage in and around the Rajuk building as part of its programme. The DSCC is continuing to conduct its mobile courts to destroy Aedes mosquito larvae. A mobile court of the DSCC on Monday sent two building owners to jail after Aedes mosquito larvae were found at their respective buildings in the capital’s Kalabagan Central Road area. The persons jailed are Md Abdul Malek (67) of 73/1 Kalabagan Central Road and Md Yousuf Ali (55) of 73/B Kalabagan Central Road, said a press release issued by the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC). During the drives, DSCC's mobile courts inspected a total of 206 households in different areas of the city, including Kalabagan, Zigatala, Dhanmondi, Motijheel, Alu Bazar and Gendaria -- to destroy Aedes mosquito larvae and its breeding grounds, according to a press release issued by the DSCC. The mobile courts also fined owners of different buildings a total of Tk 60,000, as they found Aedes mosquito larvae and dirty environment on the buildings' premises Moreover, the number of newly hospitalized patients, infected with dengue virus, has been declining over the last few days. According to the Directorate of Health Services (DGHS), 1251 new dengue patients were admitted to various hospitals across the country between Sunday and Monday morning (August 26). Of the newly infected patients, 577 were admitted to various Dhaka hospitals while 674 patients were admitted to different hospitals outside the capital. The total number of dengue patients admitted to hospitals this year crossed 64,765 till Monday. Of the total dengue infected people, 59,030 already left the hospital after taking treatment while about 5,562 people are undergoing treatment at different hospitals across the country. According to official data, death toll due to dengue virus infection has reached 52, though reports from various parts of the country suggested higher number.
