Domingo to get contract extension

Published : 14 Aug 2021 08:02 PM

South Africa's Russell Domingo took over as Bangladesh's head coach on a two-year contract in August 2019. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has now decided to extend the South African’s contract for another two years.

The next ODI World Cup will be held in India in October-November 2023. Until then, Domingo will be Bangladesh's head coach, Cricket Operations Chairman Akram Khan told the media. "Yes, we are going to extend Domingo's contract until the 2023 ODI World Cup. The other members of the coaching staff will also come under a decision soon.

After Domingo took charge, Bangladesh lost to Afghanistan at home. Even after visiting India and Pakistan, there was only disappointment. However, the performance at home with Zimbabwe was a a good one. Then the tour of Sri Lanka also did not bring good results. However, success is there of winning the ODI series against Sri Lanka at home. The Bangladesh team returned to the country after winning the series in three editions in unfavourable conditions after visiting Zimbabwe this year.

The recent 4-1 T20 series win against Australia is being hailed as the biggest success of Domingo’s tenure. However, Bangladesh played on very slow and turning wickets to bring success against the inexperienced batting line-up of Aussie who came to play without their main stars

Bangladesh will play a five-match T20 series at home against New Zealand in early September. The Kiwis are not sending a single player of the World Cup squad to Bangladesh. .However, there was still enough in the Australia squad for them to be challenged, and there will be enough in the New Zealand squad that arrives later this month for five T20Is, albeit without the IPL-bound players. It's fair to call Bangladesh favourites for that contest too.

Domingo hopes the series will be played on sporting wickets. So that they can also prepare for the World Cup.Overall, Bangladesh are in a good zone. Their morale is high after wins in Zimbabwe and against Australia.

Recently, Ashwell Prince joined a strong South African component in Bangladesh's coaching staff, which includes two former South Africa men's national head coaches: Russell Domingo, who was in charge of South Africa between 2013 and 2017 is Bangladesh's head coach, while Ottis Gibson, who took over from Domingo between 2017 and 2019, is Bangladesh's bowling coach.
