The Department of Environment (DoE) disconnected power and water connection to seven tannery factories on Tuesday for allegedly releasing liquid waste into the Dhaleshwari River violating High court order.
The tanneries are MS City Leather, Yusuf brother’s tanneries Pvt. Ltd, MS Sathi Leather Ltd, Great Eastern Tannery Pvt. Ltd, Bangla Tan Product Leather, Feni Leather Ltd, MS Pubali Tannery Ltd. All are located BSCIC Tannery Industrial Estate in Savar, on the capital’s outskirts.
Confirming the matter, Johirul Islam Talukdar, Deputy Director of the Department of Environment (Dhaka region) told Bangladesh Post that they conducted the drive as a part of their regular activities, and imposed the disconnection of power and water sources for allegedly releasing liquid tannery waste directly to the adjacent Dhaleshwari River, violating the high court direction in this regard. Adding that, such drive will continue in future as well.
Dhaka district office and the monitoring and enforcement wing of the Department of Environment jointly conducted drive while Ali Razib Mahmood Mithun, Executive Magistrate of DoE and others were present.
