New fan posters for ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ bring Stephen Strange together with Wolverine, Mystique, and other X-Men heroes and villains. The Sam Raimi-directed sequel features the return of Wanda Maximoff, as she and Doctor Strange try to clean up the mess caused by Stephen opening the multiverse in Spider-Man: No Way Home. The film will also introduce new characters to the MCU, such as America Chavez and new variants of Benedict Cumberbatch’s character.
Spider-Man: No Way Home made past Spidey films MCU canon, and there have been many rumors Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will do something similar with other Marvel movies. Rumors indicate Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man, and Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool might make cameo appearances in the film. However, there has been no indication from Disney that these rumors hold any weight. Other theories involve the movie introducing Tom Cruise as Superior Iron Man and John Krasinski as Reed Richards, but again, this is far from confirmed and is purely fan speculation at this point.
While the multiverse allows Disney to potentially make any past Marvel movies MCU canon, new fan posters imagine what the X-Men could look like if they were main characters in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The two posters from Edwin Vega on Instagram feature Wolverine, Professor X, Mystique, Jean gray, Magneto, and Cyclops.
These two posters were created prior to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ second trailer dropping, which saw the return of Patrick Stewart’s Professor X. It’s unknown how big of a role Stewart will have in the sequel, but it’s widely believed he will be part of the Illuminati, a secret society well-known by comic readers. It’s possible a live-action Captain Carter will also be a member of the Illuminati, especially since her shield was in the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ official poster. An Illuminati storyline has of course also not been confirmed by Marvel, so while this should be taken with a grain of salt, there is a bit more evidence to support this theory over others.
As mentioned above, the possibilities for which characters Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness could feature are endless. That being said, it seems unlikely that all of these X-Men characters will be featured on screen. While Stewart’s Professor X was shown in the newest trailer, Marvel may still have plans to introduce a new version of the X-Men to the MCU. Kevin Feige confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019 that the MCU would eventually introduce the X-Men, but Deadpool was supposed to be the only character not rebooted. Even if Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness does feature a shot of Fox’s X-Men team together, with the multiverse being a key part of Phase 4, Marvel can still later recast the characters and avoid continuity issues.
