Mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Md Atiqul Islam has said that the DNCC is working relentlessly to make the roads in the areas covered by the DNCC safer for the city dwellers.

In a message issued on Monday, he said that the city corporation is working to create more pedestrian-friendly roads and provide better infrastructure for public transportation and cycling in Dhaka city.

The DNCC Mayor issued the message on the occasion of the National Road Safety Day-2023.

In his message, Md Atiqul Islam said, “Road safety is important in our national life. Road communication is required in our daily working life. Since the beginning of human life in the world, countries have been working to develop a strong road communication system. Bangladesh is not an exception. Therefore, when building a new road, road safety also receives priority.”

Mentioning several problems in the city, the DNCC Mayor said that Dhaka is one of the densest cities in the world. Considering all the necessities, providing services to this vast population is a challenging task. “Every day, we face various obstacles in addressing air pollution, noise pollution, water pollution, encroachment on water bodies, and clearing obstructions from the footpaths,” he added.

In such a situation, Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) is working effectively and efficiently despite having limited human resources, he said.

Highlighting the importance of the National Road Safety Day, he said that road safety is crucial for ensuring the efficient movement of pedestrians on the road. Therefore, the National Road Safety Day could enhance public safety for a large number of people, he mentioned.

Saying that DNCC is working to make the roads safer for the citizens of Dhaka North, Md Atiqul Islam called upon the city dwellers to follow traffic rules, including while walking on the street.

He also called for avoiding crossing the road everywhere. “Please use zebra crossings, foot over-bridges, or underpasses. We should also teach our children how to walk on the road properly,” made the call in the message.

He said, “Remember, if we are more aware, our roads will be safer for us. Let the road not be a convoy of dead bodies, but a symbol of our communication, confidence, and trust.”
