Dhaka North City Corporation has started a major area based drive to eliminate the growing risk of Culex mosquito. This drive will be continued till March 16 except Friday. The drive programme was inaugurated at Mirpur-2 zone on Monday.

DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam on Monday morning inaugurated the programme after visiting the Sagufta Canal, Indoor Stadium, Mirpur section-6 and Milk Vita area.  He said, “DNCC has 54 wards in 10 areas. Earlier, larvicide and adulticide were sprayed in the morning and afternoon. But after talking to the entomologists, we changed our strategy.”

“We will not conduct drive at 10 of our zones at once, rather, we will clear out one area at a time. Mirpur-2 area has 8 wards and each ward has 60 cleaners. We will totally clear each area at a time to gain better results. All the departments are working jointly to make this project successful,” he said.

“On Tuesday, we will conduct drive at Zone-4 and Zone-5 will be at next. We want to see the result of this new method. Each area will get 10 days of total cleansing drive. We are actively performing to control this mosquito menace”, Mayor added.

All the cleaners, employees of DNCC will join at this programme to speed up the process. Executive magistrate will also join in this cleaning operation to fine establishments which are violating the rules of DNCC and harbouring mosquito larva by not cleaning their acquired lands.

More than 1, 400 cleaners and workers will spray larvicide to destroy mosquito infestation during this program. Drive at Mirpur-10 (Zone-4) on Tuesday, Karwan Bazar (Zone-5) on March 10, Mohakhali (Zone-3) on March 11, Vatara (area-9) and Satarkul (area-10) on March 13, Uttara (area-1) on March 14,  Dakshinkhan (area-7) and Uttar Khan (area-8) on March 15, Harirampur (area-6) on March 16 will be conducted. This drive will be conducted from 6am to 12am and 4pm to 6pm.

The mayor said, “We must keep the canals clean.”

He urged the citizens not to throw garbage and waste at drains and canals. Larva can’t be borne in water bodies which have water flow. So keeping the canals clean is a major priority, he added.

Mayor Atiqul Islam showed his disappointment after visiting the Milk Vita factory as it was very dirty and filled with garbage. The water bodies around the factory were covered with water hyacinth and mosquito larva.

A case was filed against the organisation. Moreover, Tk 61,000 was fined against various organisations in area-1.

DNCC Chief Executive Officer Md. Selim Reza, Chief Health Officer Brigadier General Zobaidur Rahman, Ward Councillor  Dewan Abdul Manna, Taizul Islam Chowdhury, Sajjad Hossain and other officials were present there.
