DNCC to install air quality monitors at every ward

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Mohammad Ejaz announced plans to install air quality monitoring devices across all wards of the city corporation in phases.

The announcement came during the closing ceremony of a two-day workshop on ‘Air Quality Monitoring’ held at the DNCC auditorium on Monday.

DNCC administrator said that DNCC has already installed these monitoring devices at key locations across its 10 zones, which are now actively measuring air pollution levels. The initiative is part of a research project monitoring air quality throughout DNCC areas, supported by Vital Strategies' funding and technical assistance from Nature Conservation Management (NACOM).

Monitoring stations are currently operational on rooftops of various DNCC facilities including Uttara, Mohammadpur, Kachukhet area offices, ward councilor offices, and community centers.

“We must develop Dhaka as a climate-resilient and eco-friendly city. DNCC is working comprehensively toward this goal,” Ejaz added.

The initiative represents a significant step in DNCC’s efforts to combat air pollution and implement data-driven environmental policies for Bangladesh's densely populated capital. With air quality emerging as a major public health concern, these real-time monitoring systems will help identify pollution hotspots and guide mitigation strategies.

Administrator Ejaz further said, “This is not just about collecting data – it is about creating actionable solutions to make Dhaka more livable for future generations. The greening projects complement the monitoring system by addressing pollution at its source while increasing urban resilience to climate change impacts.

The program’s expansion comes as Dhaka continues to rank among the world’s most polluted cities, with the World Bank estimating air pollution causes nearly 20 percent of premature deaths in Bangladesh annually.

DNCC officials confirmed the next phase of installations will prioritize high-traffic areas and industrial zones where pollution levels typically peak.

The event was attended by DNCC Chief Executive Officer Muhammad Asaduzzaman and other senior officials. Certificates were distributed to participants at the conclusion of the workshop.
