Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam on Sunday urged the plastic goods producers to take back used plastic bottles in order to save the environment. He said this while addressing the inaugural ceremony on ‘Exhibition of used plastic bottle’ organized by ‘BD Clean’ at T&T colony playground, Mohakhali in the capital.

The Mayor said, “The environment pollution will reduce to a great extent if we can reuse the used plastic bottles. If anyone gives back empty plastic bottle at Dhaka Airport, they will get Tk 5 for per bottle. I have talked to different plastic producing companies. I urged them to start such type of campaign.”

Mayor Atiqul also said that he will talk to different government organizations related to jute goods to produce diversified jute goods to reduce the plastic use. He said, “City Corporation will take effective measure in order to introduce jute bag as an alternative of plastic bag. We will promote the use of jute bags. I am also thinking about how I can motivate people. The city corporation is also discussing about which will be other alternatives to plastic bags in the market. ”

Local government minister Tajul Islam was the chief guest at the inauguration of the exhibition organized by the voluntary organisation BD Clean. Chief Executive Officer of DNCC Abdul Hai, Chief Waste Management Officer Commodore Manzoor Hossain and other senior officials were also present.

During the month of victory, BD Clean has collected 30 lakh empty plastic bottles from various places of the country in remembrance of the 30 lakh martyrs in the war of liberation. Pictures of Bangabandhu, boats, flags of Bangladesh, maps of Bangladesh, chairs, tables and other items made from those bottles have been found in the exhibition. Even the guests were seated at the inaugural chair made by plastic bottles.

The organisers said their intention was to raise awareness of the dangers of plastic bottles to save the environment. At the end of the exhibition, these bottles will be given away for re-processing.
