Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Md Atiqul Islam inaugurated a mosquito control campaign to destroy the breeding grounds of Aedes mosquito and creating mass awareness campaign among the common people on Friday. Ministry of youth and sports and DNCC jointly organised the anti-mosquito drive and awareness-raising programme at Nawab Habibullah Model School and College in city’s Uttara area.
In his speech, mayor Atiqul said, “Samples of insecticides to control Aedes mosquitoes will arrive from abroad in a couple of days. We will purchase insecticides in bulk after testing the samples.” He said the DNCC will now be able to purchase insecticides but the government will ensure the standard.
“We have to work round the year to prevent the spread of Aedes mosquitoes. DNCC mobile courts have been visiting different locations and taking legal actions to locate breeding grounds of Aedes mosquitoes,” he said. According to the government, dengue has claimed at least 14 lives since January but the unofficial death toll is much higher.
