The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) on Monday launched a campaign in a bid to raise awareness on how to cross roads safely at capital’s Mohammadpur area. DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam and popular film actor and founder of ‘Nirapad Sorok Chai’ Elias Kanchan joined the campaign at Green Herald International School premises, Asad Avenue in Mohammadpur.

During the campaign, they distributed leaflets to pedestrians and drivers on giving educational messages on road safety precautions and compliance with traffic laws. The mayor advised pedestrians and motorists to cross the road by pushing a push-button set up by the DNCC in front of the Green Herald School. He distributed four types of leaflets to alert pedestrians at the signal point.

There were two types of leaflets printed in Bengali and English, one for pedestrians and another for drivers which includes traffic laws and penalties. During the campaign, the mayor told the reporters, “No one inside the Dhaka cantonment area violates the traffic law. They must pay a huge amount of fine and penalties for violating traffic laws. But the same driver, outside the cantonment, commonly disobeys the law.”

The mayor said, “Laws are strictly obeyed all over the world. There is respect for the law everywhere. The main reason for this is that disobeying the law results in severe punishment and a large fine.” New laws have been enacted to increase punishment and penalties for people to respect and obey the law, he added.

Elias Kanchan said, “To improve traffic management, we need to get a formal education in this regard. Earlier, there was no formal education for cinema in our country. Now there are several courses at different universities at the cinema. In our country, now we have to introduce institutional education for traffic management.”
