The Defence Journalists’ Association of Bangladesh (DJAB) has expressed deep shock and sorrow over the martyrdom of six Bangladeshi peacekeepers in a terrorist drone attack at the Kadugli Logistics Base under the United Nations peacekeeping mission in the Abyei area of Sudan.

In a condolence statement, DJAB said its members remember the fallen peacekeepers with profound respect and prayed for the eternal peace of their departed souls.

The organisation also extended heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved families, sharing their grief during this difficult time, and wished a speedy recovery and safe return for all peacekeepers injured in the attack.

DJAB President Alamgir Hossain and General Secretary Ahamed Ullah said in the statement that, even while serving far from home, the martyred and injured peacekeepers once again proved that Bangladesh stands as a symbol of peace, humanity, and responsibility.

They said the supreme sacrifice of the fallen peacekeepers would remain indelibly recorded in history and that, although they are no longer among us, their courage, dedication, and selflessness will continue to inspire future generations.

The DJAB Executive Committee described the brutal and cowardly attack as a heinous crime against humanity and peace, strongly condemning the incident. The organisation called upon the United Nations and the international community to take firm and effective measures to ensure the safety and security of Bangladeshi peacekeepers, as well as all peacekeeping personnel deployed worldwide.

Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said six Bangladeshi peacekeepers were killed when a drone strike hit a United Nations facility in war-torn Sudan on Saturday.

According to the UN, the strike targeted the peacekeeping logistics base in Kadugli, located in Sudan’s Kordofan region. Eight other Bangladeshi peacekeepers serving with the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) were injured in the attack.

“Attacks targeting United Nations peacekeepers may constitute war crimes under international law,” Guterres said, calling for those responsible for the “unjustifiable” attack to be held accountable.
