Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina asked her party leaders and activists to remain alert so that none can create any disorder centring the January 7 Jatiya Sangsad polls.
“Evil forces will try to disrupt. But disturbances should not be allowed under any circumstances. Everyone should be aware of this. Leaders and workers of the Awami League and front organizations must work together,” she said during a meeting of the upazila unit in Tungipara in on Thursday evening.
She asked all to carry out the election campaign in compliance with the election code of conduct. “Highlight the government’s development, progress and prosperity; go to the people’s doorsteps. Leaders of the associate organizations should be encouraged and taken to the streets.”
Addressing the party workers, she said: “I have no mother, father, and brothers. You are my everything. You will take care of me.”
Citing the propaganda against her father, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, in 1974, when a Kurigram woman named Basanti was presented to highlight the plights of the people, Sheikh Hasina said the BNP had done nothing to improve the lives of the poor people but looted. On the other hand, the Awami League has changed the life of the poor people.
Gopalganj District Awami League President Mahabub Ali Khan, General Secretary GM Sahab Uddin Azam, Tungipara Upazila Awami League President Sheikh Abul Bashar Khayer, General Secretary Md Babul Sheikh, and Municipal Mayor Sheikh Tozammel Haque Tutul, among others, were present.
Earlier, the premier arrived in Tungipara via Padma Bridge on a two-day visit in the afternoon. She then paid tribute by placing a wreath at the mausoleum of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. She also participated in a special prayer for Bangabandhu, the martyr of August 15, 1975, and the martyrs of the Liberation War.
According to party sources, the premier will meet with party leaders and workers at Tungipara and Kotalipara Upazila Awami League offices this morning.
