Discussion on disaster preparedness held

A discussion on disaster preparedness capacity strengthening was held in Jamalpur with the aim of reducing the level of damage in any disaster and developing capacity to deal with disasters. Jahangir Salim, Human Resource Development Director of the Development Association, was the main speaker.

Committee President Aktaruzzaman presided over the meeting held on the bank of West Ramnagar Jhenai River under the initiative of Tetulia-Ramnagar City Development Committee (UNDC) of Ward No. 12 of Jamalpur Municipality. UNDC member Halim Chowdhury moderated the meeting among others, former police officer Muslim Uddin, Rafiqul Islam, Liza, CDO Sabbir Hossain Riyad, Area Program of Unyan Sangha spoke among others.

The speakers in the meeting said that residents of the municipality do not get any kind of municipal facilities even if they pay taxes and fees. The area gets flooded when there is a little rain or flood. The people of the area have to bear extreme suffering. Attempts are made to deal with disasters according to their own capabilities. Digging the Jhenai river and constructing a paved road on the eastern bank of the river would have removed the misery of the local people. Jahangir Salim said that along with the government, we have to increase our capacity and capability to deal with any disaster. 

In order to realize the rights, a social movement should be developed under the initiative of the Urban Development Committee.

Sixty people including women, men, children, old people, disabled people participated in the meeting.
