Nawab families were patrons of many kinds of music and dance. Nawab Ahsan Ullah Khan was an expert in playing the harmonium. Nawab Abdul Gani Ahsan used to hold regular singing sessions at Manzil.
Kashida and Qawwali were all sung in these sessions. Although the people of Dhaka were busy with other songs throughout the year, the Kashida was performed throughout the month of Ramadan.
The Bengali tradition of Kashida has been highlighted in a documentary this time. ‘Kashida of Dhaka’ has been launched on May 17 in Banglaflix, Robiscreen, Airtel Screen, Teleflix and BDflix live apps produced by Bangladhol.
This 20-minute documentary has been researched and produced by Anarja Murshid. ‘Kashida of Dhaka’ was shot by Rasel Abedin Taj, edited by Anoy Sohag, background music was directed by Prince Shuvo and actor Jayanta Chatterjee provided the background vocals.
Anarja said, “We believe that many people will be able to learn something new about the Qasida through the documentary. They will be interested in this and will make arrangements to save the lost Kashida. Thanks to Bangladhol for bringing such a lost tradition in front of the audience.”
