The ship 'MV Songa-Chita' has arrived at Chittagong Port to take the garment goods directly from Chattogram to Italy. The ship reached Chittagong Port Jetty No. 4 on Saturday afternoon.

According to the Chittagong Port sources, earlier, garment products were exported directly from Chittagong to Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Singapore.  If the ship carries garment products directly to Italy, it will create a new hope in export.  Besides, it will save time and money for the traders.

Chittagong Port Authority Secretary Mohammad Omar Faruq said the ship from Italy was anchored at the Chittagong Port jetty on Saturday afternoon.  This ship on the Chittagong-Italy route will create more facility for our traders.  The ship is scheduled to leave Chittagong Port for Italy on February 7 with some 1,100 containers full of garments products.

Garment traders said a lot of work orders are coming from Europe.  Garment factories are now busy with them.  With the launch of direct shipping on the Chittagong-Italy route, the time and cost for exporting RMG products will be greatly reduced.  If we can target the peak time, our work order will increase more, they added.

Syed Nazrul Islam, first vice-president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), said, “Lead time is very important for traders in garment exports.  Failure to maintain the time schedule damages the business reputation.  The launch of direct shipping on the Chattogram-Italy route has created a good opportunity for traders.  It must be utilized.”
