An iron bridge built two decades ago on the Lebubunia canal adjacent to Newmarket Bazar in Mirzaganj upazila of Patuakhali has collapsed. As it became unsuitable for movement, the locals built bridges with tree trunks andhave been risking their lives crossing this dilapidated bridge. Accidents are constantly happening due to this make-shift bridge. Thousands of people including students are suffering due to lack of steady communication.
After visiting the spot, it can be seen that the cross angles of the bridge are rusted and the bridge is at risk of tilting. Cement cast piles have broken down long ago. The bridge is just standing on a few poles. The locals risked their lives by building bridges with tree trunks and bamboo on the bridge poles. This often leads to small accidents.
According to the locals, students of Kismat Jhatibunia Government Primary School, Lebubunia Government Primary School, East Bajita Government Primary School and Bajita Secondary School used to come and go to school through the bridge. Besides, thousands of people from Lebubunia, Kismat Jhatibunia and North Jhatibunia villages of Madhabkhali Union are crossing the bridge. Farmers in these areas also use the bridge to supply their produce to the local market. Local resident Mosharraf Hossain Khan said traffic was disrupted as the north side of the bridge collapsed. In case of emergency, the patient has to be taken to the ambulance. Students come to school at risk. This can lead to major accidents at any time. So locals urge authorities to build a new bridge here quickly. UP member Mollah Maruf Hossain said the bridge is important to the people. There is a great need to build a new bridge here soon.
Mirzaganj Upazila LGED's Engineer Md Azizur Rahman said, I am in additional responsibility in Mirzaganj upazila. Necessary steps will be taken to find out about the bridge.
