Diarrhoea outbreak in Lama, over 100 infected, one dead

Outbreaks of diarrhea have been reported in remote Mintui Para and Pompong Para in Rupsipara Union of Lama Upazila. In the meantime, 1 person named Mangshing Mro (50) has died of diarrhea.

Long krat mro, a member of ward 8 of Rupsipara union, confirmed the death of a person suffering from diarrhea.

On Monday, Rupsipara Army Camp was informed about the matter through locals and informed Alikadam Army Zone. Later, a medical team from Alikadam Sena Zone conducted a temporary medical camp at Bara Kalarjhiri Government Primary School in Ward 9 of Rupsipara Union on Monday afternoon and provided health services.

A total of 125 patients from the surrounding areas, including Mintui and Pompong Mro Para, were treated at the medical camp and medicines were distributed free of cost. The medical team led by Captain Nuruzzaman Turya of Alikadam Zone provided this health service. At that time 33 children, 46 women and 36 men from two Mro neighborhoods were given treatment. 60% of them are diarrhea patients. Besides, 10 Bengali men and women received treatment from the medical camp.

Rupsingh Para Union chairman Saching Pru Marmar was contacted several times on his mobile phone but could not be reached for comment.

Meanwhile, 33 people from two Mro neighborhoods were admitted to Lama Government Hospital due to deteriorating condition. Lama Upazila Health Officer Dr Mainuddin Majed Chowdhury said 20 of them were diarrhea patients. He said intensive care is being provided to the patients admitted in the inter-department of the hospital. In addition, most of the patients who come to the hospital for treatment are suffering from diarrhea. Most of them are children and adults.

Dr Robin, the hospital's resident medical officer, said diarrhea patients were flocking to the hospital every day, both indoors and outdoors. The pressure of diarrhea patient has increased over the last 1 week. At the moment there is no shortage of diarrhea medicine in the hospital. Although the number of beds in the hospital is 50, medical services are being provided on the floor as additional patients are admitted, he said.
