Dhaka wants Uzbekistan mission to expand ties

Bangladesh has requested Uzbekistan to establish its embassy in Dhaka and resume the direct passenger flights Dhaka-Tashkent-Dhaka route to enhance bilateral communication in the fields of tourism, education, sports and culture between the two friendly countries.

Ambassador Md Zahangir Alam made the request to Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev while presenting his credentials on Friday, the foreign ministry said.

He sought the assistance of the President to make the first Foreign Office Consultation (FOC) meeting to be held on 27 May fruitful.

In this regard, the President of Uzbekistan requested Foreign Minister Abdulaziz Kamilov who was present there, to open a Consulate of Uzbekistan in Dhaka initially and to make the first FOC meeting between the two countries effective.

He assured that necessary steps would be taken after examining the issue of direct flights.

Upon arrival at the President's Palace, Ak Saray, a contingent of the President's Guard Regiment provided the Ambassador with a Guard of Honor and arranged for the Ambassador to be escorted 8 km from his residence to Ak Saraya in a motorcade.

Due to Covid-19 pandemic, the ceremony was held on a limited scale, the foreign ministry said.

During the conversation with the Ambassador, the President conveyed his personal greetings to the President and Prime Minister of Bangladesh and sought the assistance of the Bangladesh Ambassador in expanding bilateral relations with Bangladesh.

The Ambassador of Bangladesh assured to take appropriate steps in this regard and briefed the President on Bangladesh's success in RMG, textile, pharmaceuticals, jute and jute products and leather sectors.
